The word Ethos means the “distinctive spirit or character of an era.” It’s the underlying characteristics and values that give communities and cultures their identities, and binds them together. A culture’s ethos shapes the way its members experience reality, shaping not only their actions, but also their minds and hearts. To change a community or a culture, you must first change its ethos. And that’s what we’re all about at Ethos Chicago. Scripture tells us the good news of Jesus Christ is a power – a force that can and will transform the very ethos of peoples, cultures, and communities. As individuals who are being transformed by this power, we seek similar enrichment and renewal for our city and culture.
Ethos is a recognized church within the Presbyterian Church in America (PCA). The PCA is one of the fastest-growing denominations in America and is committed to articulating and embodying the historic Christian faith to bring about spiritual, social, and cultural renewal in major metropolitan areas around the world. Through this affiliation, the PCA provides us with a system of representational oversight and accountability. The PCA emphasizes that God is gracious, that salvation comes through Jesus by faith, that the Scriptures are authoritative, and that the mission of the church is to enrich the world with God’s renewing peace. Thus, our partnership with the PCA on a regional and national level bolsters Ethos as we seek to bring spiritual, social and cultural renewal to the city.
