2014 Ethos sermons
Ethos' 2014 Advent series focused on the theme, "Rest."
The King and His Kingdom
This series looks at Jesus' teachings in the Gospel of Matthew, focusing on the Kingdom parables as well as the Sermon on the Mount.
The Liberated Life
What is salvation? And why do we need it?
According to Timothy Keller, "Salvation is liberation. Salvation is how God intervenes in our lives to liberate us from the things that would enslave us and kill us ... If you build your identity on anything rather than God, more than God, it becomes something that enslaves you.
We are looking at Exodus and the life of Moses to help us understand the most powerful image of redemption in the Old Testament: the liberation of the Hebrew people from Egyptian bondage. If we are honest with ourselves, we know that we, too, are enslaved. We are in bondage to sex, money, and power; materialism, entertainment, and our own desires. Like the Hebrew people, we need liberation. We need redemption. We need a Redeemer.
Not the Way It’s Supposed to Be
A series on sin, brokenness and redemption.
The series was inspired, in part, by C.S. Lewis' preface to his book Paradise Lost: “To admire Satan is to give one’s vote for a world of lies, propaganda, and incessant autobiography, yet the choice is possible. Hardly a day passes without some slight movement toward it in every one of us. Sin in each of us is something that wants just to be petted and admired, to take advantage of other lives. It especially wants to be left to itself. It wants to keep well away from anything better or stronger or higher than it, anything that would make it feel small, but unimpeded, sin would exploit the whole universe if it could.”
